Basketball Play - Dribble Drive Motion - Creating a Split & Decision Making Work

Dribble Drive Motion - Creating a Split & Decision Making Work

Gerard Hillier 06/10/2016

Here are some basic drills we have found extremely valuable during the "implementing Dribble Drive" phase, which we also use on a daily/weekly basis. The importance of being able to create a "split" (where two defenders commit to the ball carrier) is pararmount within our DDM system, and just as important is the ability to find the open player (from where the 2nd defender came from) for a high percentage & open scoring option. Our "Decision Making" breakdown work is by far the most important part of our practice plan when it comes to our offensive system, very rarely will we conduct 5on5 for great periods of time (no more than 20mins per practice), rather we choose to place as much time in to 2on1, 2on2, 3on2, & 3on3 situational decision making as possible within our practice plan. We have found this approach to be very successful, creating an enviroment where players are making high percentage decisions/reads on a regular basis. There is a reasonable amount of "ugly basketball" when we first implement the DDM system, and we encourage our coaches to try and let the players "organically grow" within the system and make their own decisions/reads, though this is often easier said than done, try and "guide" the players decision making rather than making the decision for them. We encourage questions like "what was your thought process on that decision" & "what did you see that triggered that decision" See More

Basketball Play - Dribble Drive Motion - Creating a Split & Decision Making Pt.2

Dribble Drive Motion - Creating a Split & Decision Making Pt.2

Gerard Hillier 06/15/2016

Here are some more basic drills we have found extremely valuable during the "implementing Dribble Drive" phase, which we still use on a daily/weekly basis (they are a modified version of the traditional DDM Blood Drills). The importance of being able to create a "split" (where two defenders commit to the ball carrier) is pararmount within our DDM system, but the ability to be able to make an appropriate read/decision is just as important. There is no point getting in to the paint if you are just going to throw the ball away. What we are doing in this series is creating gamelike situations for our players, then letting them play it out and build on their decision making ability. You can move the initial setup to suit your teams needs, and all players are encouraged to play all positions/roles as part of their basketball IQ development. See More

Basketball Play - Houston Rockets - Double Drag Lob

Houston Rockets - Double Drag Lob

Matt Wheeler 10/07/2016

The Houston Rockets ran this play early in the first quarter of their preseason game against the New York Knicks. This play utlilizes James Harden's (1) ability to draw attention and make reads off of the ball screen. 5 screens away for 4 to make it difficult to for x4 & x5 to help on the ball screens. As 1 turns the corner 3 sets a back screen for 5 going to the rim. 1 looks to make the pass to 5 for the lob. See More

Basketball Play - Golden State Warriors - Double Drag Post Stagger Split

Golden State Warriors - Double Drag Post Stagger Split

Matt Wheeler 06/08/2017

The Golden State Warriors used this play early in Game 3 of the NBA Finals to get a look for Klay Thompson (1) off of a post entry action. It's a great play to get the defense to guard multiple actions and get the ball back in your point guard's hands for a shot. The double drag at the beginning of the play was a decoy action to get the ball into the post. After the post entry 1 & 5 set a staggered split screen for 2, who cut to the basket off of 1. 1 was getting overplayed on the screen from 5 and rejected the screen to go backdoor for a layup. Basketball Play - Communication Drill: 3v3 Flex Screen Defense

Communication Drill: 3v3 Flex Screen Defense

Matt Wheeler 11/01/2018

This continuous 3v3 drill teaches the defense to defend the flex action using different roles with different communication responsibilities. The drill will will be repeated three times so each defensive player has an opportunity to practice each part. 3 calls the screen and provides help. 2 goes over the cross screen on the baseline and communicates when matched back up. 1 communicates the down screen and opens up to allow 3 to get through the screen. 3 informs 1 when he is through the screen and matched up. Basketball Play - Communication Drill: 2 Sprints, 2 Stunts, Live

Communication Drill: 2 Sprints, 2 Stunts, Live

Matt Wheeler 11/01/2018

This competitive defensive drill focuses on closeouts, sprinting to help, and stunting at the ball. To add a communication component to it, require the defenders to say "I Got Ball" on the closeouts and "Help" when they are in help. The defense must defend and communicate four passes perfectly then they can play live 2v2. On the first two passes, the defenders sprint to help/closeout. On the third and fourth pass the defenders stunt at the ball as it is driven at them, then sprint to closeout/help. Use defense scoring in this drill. If the defense gets a stop they get a point and they stay on defense against the next team. If the defense doesn't communicate, sprint to help, close out correctly or they get scored on, they immediately lose and go to the end of the line and the offensive team goes to defense. Basketball Play - Communication Drill: 4v3 Scramble Defense

Communication Drill: 4v3 Scramble Defense

Matt Wheeler 11/01/2018

This defensive drill works on defending scramble situations when the defense is temporarily outnumbered. Once the ball is entered the drill is live and the offense tries to score 4v3. The 4th defender can enter play after 7 seconds or after a shot is taken. The three initial defenders will not have a match-up, but whoever is closest to the ball must pick it up as they buy time for the 4th defender to get on the floor. To add a communication component to the drill, require defenders to say "I Got Ball" when they closeout on the ball so they don't accidently get two defenders on the ball. If a defender is in a situation where they are guarding two people, have them say " I Got Two." The 4th player enters the floor going furthest from the ball. They must communicate who they are guarding and tell their teammates where to matchup so they can get out of the scramble situation. Basketball Play - Communication Drill: One More Drive & Kick Shooting

Communication Drill: One More Drive & Kick Shooting

Matt Wheeler 11/19/2018

This drill provides an opportunity to work on multiple skills in one setting: closeouts, footwork, attacking the paint, passing and communicaiton. 1 starts things off by passing to the 2 and finishes with a close out repetition. The three perimeter players (2,3 & 4) have their knees bent and hands up ready to step into the pass, working on their shot preparation footwork. 2 is focusing on getting two feet in the paint on the drive before passing to 3. As the ball is in the air to 3, 4 is saying "One More," which signals 3 to immediately swing the ball to 4 upon receiving it. The communication focus of this drill is in saying "One More" as the ball is in the air so the ball can be moved quickly for the open shot. Players should also communicate their teammates names as they are passing the ball to them.
