Basketball Play - Flyer Drag

Flyer Drag

Wes Kosel 03/19/2015

Here is a play from Wednesday night's game between Dayton and Boise State. Very similar to his brother at Arizona, Archie Miller runs great combinations of actions to get open shots for his best players. In this play, the Flyers spread out along the perimeter and the point guard brings the ball up the right side of the floor. 5, who is trailing the play, moves in to set a drag screen for 1. The initial pick and roll is set to get a good look at Kendall Pollard inside (with the rest of the team on the 3-point line). If Pollard isn't open inside, he clears to the corner as a flare screen is set for the point guard (or best shooter). I saw Jordan Sibert and Scoochie Smith come off of this flare screen in the game. Basketball Play - Cyclone Drag

Cyclone Drag

Wes Kosel 03/19/2015

In this early offense play from ISU, the Cylones set a drag screen with Niang at the right lane line. The point guard dribbles to the middle off of the ball-screen as Niang rolls to the basket and the 5 man completes a "short roll" to the opposite block. Hoiberg likes to utilize this short roll instead of a roll/replace action to put both of his post players near the basket for a dump down pass. If 1 doesn't have a shot, he looks to pass off to 4, 5, or hit 3 in the corner for a 3-point shot. See More

This counter to the drag play was used early in the second half. Niang moves over to set a drag screen for 1 dribbling up the right side of the floor. 2 clears out to the opposite corner to create space for Niang to cut to on a flare screen. As 1 dribbles middle, 5 sets a flare screen for Niang. 1 passes to Niang for a 3-point shot. See More

Basketball Play - 1998 Valpo Bryce Drew Game-Winning Shot

1998 Valpo Bryce Drew Game-Winning Shot

Wes Kosel 03/20/2015

In the spirit of March Madness, let's take a trip back in time to 1998 when Bryce Drew hit the game winning shot over Ole Miss. The play starts with 2.5 seconds left on the clock and Valpo down by 2 points. Homer Drew draws up a brilliant last-second play throwing the ball the length of the court to his 4 man. While in the air, Bill Jenkins made the pass to Bryce Drew on the wing. Bryce Drew hit the shot sending Valpo on their Cinderella run to the Sweet 16. The Crusaders were a #13 seed defeating #4 seed Ole Miss. Valpo will open the tournament against Maryland today. Bryce is now the head coach of the Crusaders. Just for kicks, I threw in a counter option with the inbounder running the baseline. See More

Basketball Play - SDSU Box Drive

SDSU Box Drive

Wes Kosel 03/21/2015

SDSU used this play to get an isolation look at the elbow with the 4 man. The play starts with 2 making the first cut to the opposite corner and 3 stepping out to the right corner. The point guard then makes the entry pass to 4 at the elbow and clears out to the left wing. After 1 clears, 4 looks to drive right to the basket looking for a lay-up or foul. See More

Basketball Play - Duke - Allen Middle Drive

Duke - Allen Middle Drive

Wes Kosel 04/08/2015

Duke went to this play multiple times in the game. Although simple, the play utilizes the strength of Allen's penetration skills. Allen gets the ball on the left wing and drives from left to right to the rim for a lay-up. Wisconsin did not collapse on the penetration allowing Allen to make the 1 on 1 play at the basket. The play is initiated with a pass to 5 at the elbow. Once 5 has the ball, down-screens on both sides of the floor are set by 4 and 1. If 2 and 3 aren't open on the down-screens, 3 looks to curl around 5 for a hand-off. 3 attacks into the lane looking to score or pass off to a shooter. See More

Basketball Play - Don Showalter USA U16 3 Line Pick & Roll Drill

Don Showalter USA U16 3 Line Pick & Roll Drill

Wes Kosel 06/22/2015

In this drill, there are 3 lines (1 with guards, 1 with wings, and 1 with post players). A coach starts with the ball on the opposite wing. In option 1, the drill starts with G passing to W and then G cuts through to the opposite corner. P steps out to set a ball-screen for W. W drives into the lane and hits P on the roll. The coach passes to the G in the corner and the post player on the baseline passes to W. The drill ends with all 3 players getting a shot. In option 2, it starts the same except that W will pass to G in the corner, coach will pass to W, and the post player on the baseline will pass to the post rolling off of the screen to the short corner.
