Basketball Play - Cleveland Cavaliers - Flip PNR

Cleveland Cavaliers - Flip PNR

Matt Wheeler 05/31/2018

The Cleveland Cavaliers have taken a page out of the playbook from LeBron James' time with the Miami Heat to put him in a situation where he can attack the basket and create out of a ball screen. The pindown screen for 1 and the pass back to James (3) sets 1 up for the flare screen. x5 has to stay back on the flare screen from 5 to protect against a layup from 1. This puts x5 in a drop coverage where he has to contain the ball as James come off the ball screen from 5. 5 rolls to the basket to look for the layup as 4 and 2 provide spacing on the weak side. Basketball Play - Cleveland Cavaliers - 13 PNP Switch

Cleveland Cavaliers - 13 PNP Switch

Matt Wheeler 05/31/2018

The Cleveland Cavaliers frequently use this play to force the defense to make a switch on the ball screen and get LeBron James an advantage against a smaller defender in the mid-post area. 1 looks to get the ball directly to James (3) out of the ball screen then lets him go to work. If the defense is fronting James and 1 can't get him the ball, 5 cuts to the high post area to receive the pass from 1. With the defender now on James' back, 5 can make a pass leading James to the basket. NBA Finals Preview: Cleveland Cavaliers See More

Basketball Play - Wofford Terriers - PNP Runner

Wofford Terriers - PNP Runner

Matt Wheeler 03/19/2019

Here is one of Wofford's go-to plays to get their leading scorer, Fletcher Magee, open off of screens in order to utilize his quick release. Magee (2) makes a slow cut under the basket to set himself up for a baseline screen. 1 dribbles off of the ball screen from 4 and passes to him up top. Once 4 get the ball, 2 sprints off of the screen from 5 to get open in the corner. 2 catches the pass from 4 and looks to hit a three-point shot. Basketball Play - Murray State Racers - Hook Pindown PNR

Murray State Racers - Hook Pindown PNR

Matt Wheeler 03/19/2019

When Murray State has to run a half-court set it will usually be a ball screen for their point guard Ja Morant. This play combines multiple actions to make the help on the screen late so their point guard can attack and get in the lane. 4 starts the play with a pindown screen for 3. 3 curls around the screen to set down screen for 5. By having 5 use a screen in order to sprint into the ball screen it gives him a head start on his defender and makes it difficult to provide help on 1 coming off the ball screen. Basketball Play - Virginia Cavaliers - PNR Continuity

Virginia Cavaliers - PNR Continuity

Matt Wheeler 04/04/2019

Virginia uses a pick and roll continuity set that provides multiple opportunities for ball screens in a single possession. 1 dribbles off the ball screen looking for 5 rolling to the basket. If he isn’t available, 1 immediately passes to 4 up top. 4 looks for a quick pass to 5 continuing his cut to the rim. This is extremely effective against teams that hard hedge because x5 now has to sprint back to the paint to take away the layup. If 4 doesn’t have anything he will reverse the ball to one of the perimeter players. Just like in their motion offense, Virginia gives their players freedom to make decisions in this play. Most of the time 2 will make a backdoor cut, then 4 will follow his pass to 3 with a ball screen. This action can run continuously on both sides of the floor until they get the shot they want. The Cavaliers have the option of 4 reversing the ball to 2 and following with the ball screen. If this happens 3 cuts to the opposite corner, taking the place of 2 and keeping the continuity going. Basketball Play - Virginia Cavaliers - PNP Runner

Virginia Cavaliers - PNP Runner

Matt Wheeler 04/08/2019

This has been one of Virginia's favorite after-timeout plays of the NCAA tournament so far. The baseline screen for 3 is a similiar action to what they do in their Blocker-Mover motion offense but this time they run it as a set play to make sure Kyle Guy (3) gets the ball for a look at a three-point shot. 1 dribbles left off the screen to shift the defense to that side of the floor. On the airtime of the pass to 5, 1 cuts across the lane and 3 cuts off the screen from 4. 5 passes to 3 for the shot. Blog Post: Virginia's Elite Efficiency on Both Sides of the Ball See More

Basketball Play - Team USA - PNR Twist vs Zone

Team USA - PNR Twist vs Zone

Matt Wheeler 09/11/2019

Team USA used multiple strategies to try to combat the zone defense that Turkey played throughout most of their World Cup game. In this play the two ball screens resulted in Kemba Walker (1) being matched up against a post player in the middle of Turkey's zone. On the first ball screen from 4, x1 fought through the screen to get back matched up with 1. 4 cut to the wing to occupy x2 and keep him from providing help on the second screen. When 1 dribbled off the screen from 5 to the middle of the floor, he was able to attack x5 one on one fand use his quickness advantage to get a basket. Basketball Play - Connecticut Sun - Dive PNR Runner

Connecticut Sun - Dive PNR Runner

Matt Wheeler 09/19/2019

Connecticut has a unique advantage with a 6'6" center, Jonquel Jones, as one of their better three-point shooters. This play starts out with Jones (5) diving to the basket as 1 dribbles at her. 1 then comes back to the left side of the floor off the ball screen from 4. 5 cuts to the corner off the baseline screen from 2. By having a perimeter player set the last screen, it forced a late switch, giving Jones the size advantage to get off the shot. See video clip below. See More
