Basketball Play - New Orleans Pelicans "Away Double Backdoor"

New Orleans Pelicans "Away Double Backdoor"

Gibson Pyper 04/23/2015

New Orleans runs alot of Horns sets, and one of their favorite sets is to pass to the elbow and have the point guard and opposite Big set a double down screen for the wing player (usually Eric Gordon) to attack out of a dribble handoff. Against Golden State in Game 1 they ran that same action with a nice counter; instead of executing a dribble handoff with the guard on the wing, the big turns and dribbles at the ballside wing who then cuts backdoor. Basketball Play - Bulls Secondary Hand-Off for Rose

Bulls Secondary Hand-Off for Rose

Wes Kosel 04/20/2015

In this play, Rose starts with the ball and passes to the trail man then cuts to the opposite corner. The ball is moved to the right wing as 4 screens away for 2. If 2 isn't open, he passes to 4 on the pop as 1 cuts across the baseline around a staggered screen from 5 and 3. If Rose isn't open on the stagger, he cuts into the lane looking to get the hand-off from 4. Through all off the actions, Rose circles the entire floor forcing his defender to chase him around. Basketball Play - Clipper Stagger Options

Clipper Stagger Options

Wes Kosel 04/20/2015

Here are 3 stagger options from the Clippers. In option 1, 1 cuts off of a staggered screen and gets a hand-off from 5 on the wing. If 1 doesn't have a scoring option, 1 passes to 2 on the wing letting 2 look to penetrate and kick. In option 2, 1 uses the staggered screen and the bottom screener runs to the weak side off of a down-screen from 4. 5 dribbles across the floor looking to pass instead of the hand-off to the point guard. In option 3, 1 comes off of the staggered screen as tight as possible looking to get the hand-off from 5 inside the 3-point line. See More

Basketball Play - Belmont Slip

Belmont Slip

Gibson Pyper 03/20/2015

Belmont ran Pindown DHO action to open the game for the first couple of sets. On the first set, it was a quick shot. The next set they ran it into a high ballscreen, but because of Belmont's great 3 point shooting at almost every position the floor was spread. The player setting the high ballscreen noticed his defender was over helping and so he sprinted to the rim quickly for a layup. See More

Basketball Play - Gut

Gut

Rory Hamilton 07/29/2015

The play starts by the point guard passing a guard on the right-wing. The guarded player then goes to opposite elbow area while a pass to the corner is designed to bring the bottom player of the zone out away from the block. After passing to the corner the guard cuts hard looking for a quick give and go and one the point guards catch screens the weak side of the zone bringing the 4 man right into the gut of the zone for a quick pass. After setting a screen the guard will then receive a screen by the post player creating some misdirection and difficulty for the defense. See More

Basketball Play - UAB Option Double

UAB Option Double

Wes Kosel 03/19/2015

In this play by UAB, the Blazers send the 3 down underneath the basket where he then has the option to cut off of a staggered screen or single screen. Early in the game, UAB has been utilizing the single option. Once 3 gets to the wing, 1 and 2 clear out to the perimeter and 4 and 5 move up to set a staggered ball-screen for 3. The play has been blown up by Iowa State so they haven't gotten all the way through to the ball-screen, but it is a solid action that will force the Cyclones to defend UAB's quick guards. See More

Basketball Play - Robert Morris Hawk Double

Robert Morris Hawk Double

Craig LeVasseur 03/19/2015

Robert Morris used this play in the second half against North Florida in NCAA First Four action. This is a common NBA hawk set sometimes known as 351. The 3 man's defender has all of the work here, as he must commit to helping on the hawk screen just enough to force a difficult Show on the side p/r, and then must recover back to the pick and pop. In this game, UNF was aware of the play and x2 cheated off of his man to rotate to the 3 man on the pick and pop. Lucky Jones was still able to get the defender off his feet, however, and drew a 3 shot foul. See More

Basketball Play - 1-4 Blast

1-4 Blast

Craig LeVasseur 03/19/2015

Robert Morris ran this play with 3 minutes to go and a small lead over North Florida to get an open mid-range jumper. Starting out of a 1-4 set, the 1 hits the wing and pins down for the 4 man to receive a ball reversal. 1 continues under the rim while 5 rips 3 under the rim. From here, it turns into common Blast action. 5 pins for 1 to receive a DHO with 4. 3 and 2 time their pin down so that 3 comes off of the screen right after 1 receives the DHO, setting up an open mid-range jumper. Craig LeVasseur 05/06/2015

Memphis ran this early offense action in Game 2 versus the Warriors. It features a thru cut by Mike Conley, and several different options branching off. 5 sets a wide pindown for 2 while 1 finishes his thru cut and curls off of 4 on the block. 3 can hit 2 on the pindown, 1 on the thru cut, or 4 sealing for a post up. Basketball Play - Wisco On-Ball Flare

Wisco On-Ball Flare

Kevin Bruinsma 05/10/2015

In this specific play Wisconsin made a modification to the common roll & replace ball screen set in which the 4/5 set a ball screen then roll to the rim while the other big lifts to the top of the key replacing him. This makes it tough for the defense to keep somebody in the hole to defend the roll guy. In this Wisconsin ball screen set after Frank Kaminsky sets the ball screen and begins to roll, the 4 man Nigel Hayes screens in for Kaminsky who flares to the wing. With Kaminsky’s man defending the ball screen and retreating quickly to get back to him, Hayes’ defender is in help side to pick up the rolling Kaminsky. Hayes is able to create a deep screening angle to pin Kaminsky’s defender in freeing him up for a wide open jump shot. This small variation was very effective as Kentucky’s bigs were more used to covering the traditional roll and replace action with Kaminsky rolling to the rim, and Hayes replacing him. See More
