Great for group workouts forcing the players involved to communicate. Instead of just dictating who is shooting & passing, the ball-handler is forced to make a decision based off their teammates communication. Everyone involved in the drill is held accountable through every detail. The ball-handler has to come off with pace and use their eyes to see what's in front of them and their teammate before making a decision. The ball-handler's teammate has to be vocal and be shot ready. The drill will only go as smooth as the players communcation and togetherness. One of the best ways to create catch & shoot 3's is by getting dribble penetration into the paint, forcing the defense to collapse, kicking out for rhythm shots. In this drill, there is decision making involved for the ball handler to make the correct pass once they get downhill into the box. The decision making that is added to this drill allows players to develop making quick decisions and ultimately making the right play. The progression of drills is really effective in this Boston College "Fast Break Concepts" video created by Coach Chris Oliver of @BballImmersion. The 4v4 Transition Drill that begins at about the 7:00 mark was one that I thought was particularly useful. The Offense starts with a slight 4 v 2 advantage and seeks to make a pitch ahead pass for a score. Whether the offense misses or makes, the defense will then take the ball back up the court 4v4. SGP Shooting Series is a drill that we run daily. It is a great drill for building not only shooting, passing, and dribbling skills - but also chemistry between players. This drill is used as a drill to work on reads versus defense and passing accuracy as well. We really stress pace of play in our offense and this drill is great for getting the players to feel the speed and pace they need to work at. Rules for the drill: Our goal is 10 shots per 1 min. With our better shooters we will go 12 per 1 min. We will go 12 minutes ideally, but on days that we fit this series into our individual drills we will go at the very least 8 minutes. You must thank the passer when you make a shot. You must call out the action that you are performing - i.e, curl, fade, etc. Alternate in air passes and bounce passes. As part of #PlayerDevelopmentWeek I am putting together a series of drill progressions that we use in order to develop skills to fit our Dribble Drive Motion Offense. in this last installment we are focusing on "Shooting". On top of developing our players' ability to attack, finish & come to clean stops we want our players to be able to make the "Quick Pitch" pass vs helping defenses. We want all of our players who are not involved in the drive to the rim to have a "Catch to Shoot" mentality. We play heavy emphasis on players catching the basketball with the ability to rise up and shoot immediately. The "Chair Drill" presented below is a staple 2/0 Shooting Drill that is designed to shoot the three most common Drive & Kick opportunities that our players get. Players get 2-3 shots at each of the three locations, and then the same is repeated on the opposite end of the floor. This drill is one that could be easily tweaked and catered to fit your offense's most common shots as well. As part of #PlayerDevelopmentWeek I am putting together a series of Drill Progressions that we use in order to develop skills to fit our Dribble Drive Motion Offense. In this third installment we are looking at the use of "Dribble Stops". Good Defenses will not be beaten by the first drive of a possession so it is important that players know how to use "Dribble Stops" as a means to keep the pressure on the defense. We place heavy emphasis on the use of 1) Stride Stops, 2) Two Foot Jump Stops, and 3) The Use of the Bounce Out Dribble. These three "Dribble Stops" allow you make plays after a failed drive, and in the case of the Bounce Out Dribble allow you to keep the basketball moving. The 3/0 Stride Stop Drill presented below is a 3 Man Progression Drill in which we are asking players to land perfect Stride Stops, followed by perfect timing of Second Cuts. Once players have moved beyond the 3/0 portion of the drill we can load the drill with defense. We use this shooting drill to work on our split cut actions when there is a post feed. We use coaches as extra passers in order to get more reps. We also always have a defender on the post player and will also progress to having the drill be 3v3. The defender will be instructed by a coach on how to guard the post. The 11 Man Fastbreak is one of our players' favorite drills. It is essentially a continous 3 on 2 transition drill that we use to emphasize pitch aheads and "Finding Advantages." This is generally a drill where I try not to blow the whistle much, but I will blow the whistle if we are straying from our transtion principles. I generally choose to emphasize 1) Running the Sideline Hard, 2) Hunting Pitch Ahead Passes, 3) Keeping Advantages Alive, and 4) Attacking the Rim.
