Basketball Play - Houston Rockets Elbow Get

Houston Rockets Elbow Get

Craig LeVasseur 05/12/2015

Houston used this play multiple times in the 1st round series against the Dallas Mavericks. Josh Smith and Dwight Howard posed massive problems defensively for the Mavericks with this play. Dwight Howard slipped or rolled hard for multiple lobs, sealed x4 when the defense switched, and even sealed on a switch and then spun out again for a lob. Add in Josh Smith's ability to finish with his running left hook in the lane, and this play caused fits for the defense. See More

Basketball Play - Houston Rockets Turn 4 Flare

Houston Rockets Turn 4 Flare

Craig LeVasseur 05/12/2015

Houston used this play in the 1st Round of the NBA Playoffs against the Dallas Mavericks for a Josh Smith to Dwight Howard lob. This simple Turn 4 set gives Smith good positioning for a post up, and the flare option for Trevor Ariza is always available to keep the defense honest. A 4-5 pick and roll is a difficult enough play to defend, but moving the screen down to the block confuses the coverages even more than usual. In this play the defense commited to the pick and roll too soon, and Howard spun out of the pick for a lob pass. See More

Basketball Play - Houston Rockets Big-Big Drag

Houston Rockets Big-Big Drag

Craig LeVasseur 05/12/2015

This is a very basic early offense option that Houston used against Dallas in the 1st round of the NBA Playoffs. The drag screen typically involves the point guard and one or both bigs, but here Josh Smith is the ballhandler and coming off of a screen from Dwight Howard to his strong left hand. The NBA 4 man is not used to defending the ballhandler in a P/R, and Howard rolls hard to the rim always looking for a lob, making this an extremely difficult cover for the defense. Shooters are spread in the corners to limit the ability of help defenders. See More

Basketball Play - Houston Rockets "Elbow Get"

Houston Rockets "Elbow Get"

Gibson Pyper 05/07/2015

The Houston Rockets have hurt teams alot this postseason by utilizing their power forwards as Pick & Roll ballhandlers and forcing the opponents two big men to both defend the Pick & Roll. They have used Josh Smith & Terrance Jones to create easy buckets against both the Mavericks and now the Clippers. They opened up Game 2 with this set and scored multiple times against the Mavericks. The Atlanta Hawks also utilized this set against the Wizards, getting an easy lob. This set was made famous by the Phoenix Suns 7 Seconds or Less offense, naming it "Elbow Get" as they utilized Diaw & Shawn Marion to score off of it often. Rockets get the ball to the power forward at the elbow (or lane line extended) and have Dwight Howard set a ballscreen and roll to the rim. See More

Basketball Play - Memphis Grizzlies Fist 2 vs. Ice

Memphis Grizzlies Fist 2 vs. Ice

Craig LeVasseur 05/06/2015

Memphis ran this action in Game 2 against Golden State. The "Fist 2" set is a staple of the Chicago Bulls offense using Derrick Rose, and the Grizzlies used it well here against the Warriors, who "Ice" against the Side P/R. The 5 man screens against the Ice, and the 2 man drives hard to occupy x5 on the help. This set works best with a 5 man who can short roll or pop into the pocket created by the Ice, and having a great duck-in 4 man like Zach Randolph to occupy the weakside help works even better! Basketball Play - Clippers Zipper L ATO

Clippers Zipper L ATO

Craig LeVasseur 04/29/2015

The Clippers used this ATO play in Game 5 against the Spurs, down 3 with 30 seconds left in the game. Chris Paul receives an L ballscreen from the Blake Griffin and DeAndre Jordan, and the play is set up by Paul using the screen from Jordan. Jordan rolls hard off of the screen, and the spread alignment forces x4, Duncan, to bump the roll from Jordan and avoid the lob. Paul quickly throws back to Griffin, who swings and follows for a Side P/R with Jamal Crawford. There is no way Duncan can Show against the ballscreen after having to bump Jordan in the paint, and this forces a difficult rotation for the Spurs to contain the roll by Griffin. See More

Basketball Play - Mavericks Spread Pick

Mavericks Spread Pick

Wes Kosel 04/23/2015

Here are 3 options from the Dallas Mavericks to get Dirk Nowitzki a shot on a pick & pop. In option 1, the ball is reversed through Nowitzki to 3 on the right side of the floor. Nowitzki sets a ball-screen for 3 and pops for a shot. In option 2, 5 sets a ball-screen for 1 to drive baseline. 5 rolls and Nowitzki replaces 5. In option 3, Nowitzki flips the ball-screen for 3 so that he can drive baseline. Nowitzki pops towards the elbow for a shot. See More

Basketball Play - CAVS 13 Duck-In ATO

CAVS 13 Duck-In ATO

Craig LeVasseur 04/22/2015

Here is a simple but effective ATO play that Cleveland ran against Boston. It's a 1-3 high pick and pop with James Jones and Kyrie Irving, and the pin down action for 3 to start the play puts x3 in a trailing position and unable to make a hard hedge against Irving. As 1 throws back to an open Jones, 5 ducks in and occupies his defender, forcing x2 to rotate and leaving J.R. Smith wide open for a corner 3. See More

Basketball Play - Drag

Drag

Andrew Lacey 04/21/2015

With the growing amount of teams using the ball screen in today's game; we decided to implement a couple simple quick ball screen actions that were not apart of our basic ball screen movements. The Ball screen is one of the toughest actions to guard in today's game. We have found it easy to get a get quality look in the lane off our ball screen sets. I discussed in my article published in the Winning Hoops Magazine (Sept./Oct. Edition) -"Using Ball Screens in your Motion Offense" that we generally use our ball screen actions after we get the defense moving. See More

Wes Kosel 04/21/2015

In this Flex Option from OKC, the ball is reversed to the left wing starting the flex action at the right post. 4 screens for 2 who cuts into the lane. 5 screens down for 4. If 4 gets the ball without a shot, he can pass to 1 and set a ball-screen or dribble towards 1 giving him the ball on a dribble hand-off. See More
