Basketball Play - Houston Rockets 2 Off

Houston Rockets 2 Off

Adam Spinella 05/10/2016

For the Houston Rockets who have a star player that is a guard, they often see him be overplayed on the perimeter and denied the basketball for a reversal. All backdoor sets that are effective are counters to previously scouted plays or main sets that a team runs, and the Rockets took that into consideration when running this backdoor clearout for James Harden. Coming out of a chin formation, they send their 4-man thru on the baseline, and then clear out that entire side of the floor for Harden to dart backdoor. See More

Basketball Play - Boise State-False Motion

Boise State-False Motion

Kyle Brown 03/13/2013

A great way to run some time off the clock and limit possesions is to run "false motion" boise state runs some of the best that I have seen. They were able to almost beat UNLV at UNLV while running this down the stretch into 1 of their sets. The most important teaching points for this is to cut to score, short easy passes, and stay high and wide. See More

Basketball Play - Motion LoGo

Motion LoGo

Kyle Gilreath 03/05/2013

The University of Florida ran this offensive set on Saturday afternoon in their victory over the Alabama Crimson Tide. Florida is not known for having very big point guards, but coach Billy Donovan does a terrific job teaching them skills all around the basket; especially in the post. In this play he sets up an off the block pick and roll with Scottie Wilbekin and Patrick Young. Some may think this play is easy to guard but with two knock down shooters in Murphy and Rosario on the perimeter, it is very difficult to help. See More

Basketball Play - 15 Again

15 Again

Kyle Gilreath 03/14/2013

I have been waiting for two years to get a chance to check out Larry Shyatt's Wyoming Cowboys squad. Last night it took some searching on my cable box but I finally found their game versus the Lobos of New Mexico. The Cowboys fought hard all game to attempt an upset but the Lobos were just too much. New Mexico ran this nice half-court action very well to get an easy bucket down low with a throwback to 5. See More

NBA Play of the Day May 17: New York Knicks 15 Power

Kyle Gilreath 05/17/2013

In an attempt to get Amar'e Stoudamire going during his limited minutes, Mike Woodson had the New York Knicks ran this post-up action several times last night in their win over the Indiana Pacers in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Semi-Finals. Spreading the floor our the way the Knicks did made this action difficult to run and would be an excellent option if you have a dominant post player on your team. By using Jason Kidd to set the screen on Stoudemire, you make the defense make a decision to switch or help and recover. In my opinion, switching is not even an option. By helping and recovering, the defense arrives late and allows the post player to catch and make a move towards the rim quicker. See More

Basketball Play - Dribble Weave

Dribble Weave

Kyle Gilreath 05/31/2013

Trying to head into halftime with much needed momentum in Game 5 of the ECF versus the Miami Heat, Pacers' head coach Frank Vogel drew up this action that worked flawlessly. Unfortunately, David West missed the point blank lay-up. What made this play so successful was that Chris Bosh (guarding West) fell asleep ball watching and didn't see West cut behind his head. Basketball Play - 1-Hand Pass Follow Pick & Roll

1-Hand Pass Follow Pick & Roll

Kyle Gilreath 07/19/2013

Teaching your players to effectively and efficiently pass with 1 hand will improve skills and power and become overall better passers. The key to this drill is teaching both passers how to catch the ball and obsorb the force into your hand like a spring and fire the pass back from the shoulder area. When setting the pick & roll/pop many coaches force their players to roll opening their chest up so they never turn their back to the ball. I like to give my players the option to roll either way depending on their comfort level. (turning over their low shoulder or opening up). I personally prefer the quick turn (instead of opening to the ball) because it is quicker and the screener can create more space more efficiently. If they choose to turn over their low shoulder make sure they do it quickly and snap their head around first to locate the ball. Today I had each player make 3 shots from each spot/move and then repeated the drill on the right side. See More
