Basketball Play - Box Warriors

Box Warriors

Rory Hamilton 07/21/2017

The play looks to take advantage of a switch using a backscreen on a guard and then rolling big immediately to the basket. Initial Set-up: Box Alignment with post players on the blocks and guards at the elbows. Play can be initiated on either side with a pass to the wing. Guards should catch as close to FT extended as possible. The point guard fills to ball side corner and the weakside guard fills to slot area. The ball side post sprints to catch the ball at the strong side elbow. Once the post player has caught the ball she immediately turns to the inside while the weak side post comes up and sets a back screen for the slot guard. The guard cuts off the screen demanding and forcing the switch. The post player screens and seals guard and immediately rolls back to the ball and receives a pass for layup. The ball side guards interchange or screen to occupy the defense. You can also run the same action off of a flare screen. This would be a good option if you have a great shooter. See More

Basketball Play - OU

OU

Rory Hamilton 07/18/2017

Here is an excellent sideline out of bounds I've seen coach Sherri Coale run over the years. I've added a few of my own wrinkles to it but its a great play with multiple options. Initial set up is a your best shooter at the FT line and best finishing guard around the slot area. Both post players are positioned on the blocks. 3 player times cut and waits for 5 to flash for basketball similar to the blind pig action in the flex offense. The point guard passes to the post player flashing to the elbow and the post immediately looks to hit the 3 man on a backdoor (vs. aggressive defense). If the backdoor is not available, the point guard receives a dribble handoff (DHO) from the post player. After receiving the DHO, the point guard stretches the play out while the 4 man flashes to the block for a potential post pass. The 5 man will then receive a back screen from the shooter for a potential lob pass. 2 shapes up after backscreen and looks for a shot or immediately looks to dribble over and post the mismatch. If the guard cannot get the ball to the post player due to being fronted, then the weakside big flashes to catch and immediately throw a high-low pass into the post. See More

Basketball Play - Los Angeles Clippers - ATO Decoy Hammer Comeback

Los Angeles Clippers - ATO Decoy Hammer Comeback

Ryan Nguyen 04/26/2017

With the LA Clippers trailing 88-83 with 1:14 in the 4th quarter, they ran this ATO/EOG SLOB "Decoy Hammer" action against the Utah Jazz in Game 5. 2 (JJ Redick) sets a flare screen for 3 (Austin Rivers). This is decoy action as the defense has to make a decision whether to switch or not. In this case, the Jazz decide not to switch and this slight indecisveness (they switched on the 1/3 fake ball-screen action which might have caused some confusion) gave Redick space to run into a shot off of the comeback screen for 5. Basketball Play - Cleveland Cavaliers - Hawk Bump

Cleveland Cavaliers - Hawk Bump

Ryan Nguyen 04/05/2017

This Hawk set is a wrinkle from the Cleveland Cavaliers "Hawk Stagger" action when X2 denies 2 cutting to the basket off of the back screen. Instead of 2 cutting off of the weakside stagger screen from 4 & 5, he sets a double ball-screen with 3 for 1. As 1 attacks off of the ball screen, 3 rolls to the short corner and 5 sets a down screen for 4 as X5 is zoning up to help on the penetration and roll. 1 has option driving it to the basket, passing to 3 on the roll, 2 "shaking" behind 3's roll or drive-and-kick to 4 (Kevin Love) exiting to the wing. Basketball Play - Michigan -Tandem PNR DHO

Michigan -Tandem PNR DHO

Matt Wheeler 03/17/2017

Michigan ran this play at the end of the first half in their game against Oklahoma State to try to get the last shot. The back screen for 3 is a decoy but it causes x5 to be late on the ball screen and forces a switch onto 1. When 2 turns the corner on the second ball screen Michigan has two mismatches with a x5 guarding 1 and x2 guarding 5 in the post. See More

Basketball Play - Double Stagger Iso Gate Action

Double Stagger Iso Gate Action

Dana Beszczynski 12/04/2016

This is a BLOB play run by Lokomotiv Kuban from the 1st Half of their VTB League game against reigning Euroleague Champions CSKA Moscow. The curl action off the initial back screen sets up the next movement with the inbounder coming off a double stagger and curling to the weak side looking for a pass. As the inbounder is clearing the the double stagger, 5 & 4 move to set a "gate screen" for the 2 man coming through looking for the 3 pt shot. This is a bang-bang action forcing the defense to choose what to guard. When 3 receives the ball, he has isolation, looking to attack the defender or 2 has an open shot off the gate screen. Sasa Obradovic recently took over at Lokomotiv after having began the season in Greece on the bench of PAO. He is quickly turning Loko back into the team it was last season when it reached the Euroleague Final 4. See More

Basketball Play - Minnesota Lynx - EOG SLOB UCLA Mid-post Kickout 3

Minnesota Lynx - EOG SLOB UCLA Mid-post Kickout 3

Matt Wheeler 10/21/2016

The Minnesota Lynx ran this play with the score tied 73-73 and 35.8 seconds left in game 5 of the WNBA Finals. Once the ball was inbounded, 1 made a UCLA cut into the mid-post area to receive the pass from 2. 3 (Maya Moore) set a back screen for the 4 and then ran off the screen from 5 to get the 3 point shot. Though 3 missed the shot, 4 was in offensive rebounding position and was able to collect the rebound and get to the free throw line. See More

Basketball Play - Lithuania - DHO UCLA Shuffle

Lithuania - DHO UCLA Shuffle

Matt Wheeler 08/08/2016

Lithuania ran this unique shuffle cut variation in their opening round game against Brazil. Typically shuffle cut actions put the player receiving the staggered screen in the weakside corner . This way they can easily come off of the staggered screen after the shuffle screen takes place. In this play, 3 uses the UCLA cut to look for a layup on the strong side. If 3 isn't open he moves to weakside block to open up a cutting area for 1, who is using the shuffle screen from 4. 4 & 5 then immediately set a staggered screen for 3. If 3 doesn't have a shot, Lithuania has added a ball screen option where the point guard sets a back screen for the 5 to free him up for a layup. See More

Basketball Play - Memphis Grizzlies - SLOB Iverson Side Elevator

Memphis Grizzlies - SLOB Iverson Side Elevator

Matt Wheeler 08/01/2016

The Memphis Grizzlies ran this down 4 with 20 seconds left in an NBA Summer League game. In this situation they would need 2 scores and they opted to go for the 3 coming out of a timeout. The multiple screening actions from 4 & 5 caused the defensive confusion and led to an open shot for 4. 4 & 5's defenders have to guard back to back screening actions, first with the Iverson cut made by 2 and then the elevator screen for 3. If 5 cut to the basket instead of drifting to the perimeter he might have gotten a layup or at least would have created more space for the shot from 4. See More
