Basketball Play - Duck and Pop

Duck and Pop

Randy Brown 05/15/2013

Cutting action sets up a curl and pop option for 3 and 5 respectively. 1 and 3 cut initially to set up ball reversal. On reversal from 2-4-1, 3 curls using 5's screen, followed by a screen down by 2 to free 5. This play is perfect for a scoring 3 man and a 5 that can shoot the perimeter jump shot. Both options will be present. Give it a try! See More

Basketball Play - Spur

Spur

John Leonzo 05/15/2013

Here is a set play that was run numerous times in the Spurs second game vs. the Golden State Warriors last night. This play starts out of a 3-out 2-in set and quickly develops into a set that gives you a screen and roll option on the strong side and a stagger screen on the weak side. This play is effective because the strong side ball screen forces the defenders of 5 or 3 on the weak side to be in help and will allow either 5 or 3 to slip to the basket after setting their screen. Basketball Play - Quick Loop

Quick Loop

Kyle Gilreath 05/15/2013

This is another flex-ish set that the Golden State Warriors ran last night versus the Spurs. Rather than running the traditional flex, the Warriors spread out the floor and went into a quick 3-man game to get Stephen Curry a quick 3-pointer from a hand-off late in the 3rd quarter. See More

Basketball Play - Memphis Horns Rip

Memphis Horns Rip

Daniel Murphy 05/15/2013

First play Memphis ran in the second half of their game 2 win over OKC. This is a great set play that involves backscreens and cuts to the rim. This puts a lot of pressure on the defense. Although Memphis did not get a great shot attempt, there are multiple opportunities to score on this play. Starting the point guard in the corner allowed a little-big back screen and allows the best passes to feed the best post player isolated on the block. See More

NBA Play of the Nigh May 15: Golden State Warriors Elbow Flex

Kyle Gilreath 05/15/2013

I am sure I have posted this play in the past but it is one of my favorites so I wanted to post it again! The Golden State Warriors went to this action in the 1st Half of Game 4 versus the San Antonio Spurs in the Western Conference Semi-Finals. This elbow set into a flex action is very popular in the NBA; Stan Van Gundy ran it religiously in Orlando. While us coaches are all very familiar with the Flex, I have learned recently that many young players today are not familiar with how to run the play NOR guard it. In my opinion, if you have two great scorers on the floor, this is a very difficult action to guard. The defense has to respect the flex cut give up a lay-up. Then by pinning down on the screener, the defense must make a decision how to guard and if they over-react the big will be open slipping to the rim. See More

Basketball Play - High Dive Special

High Dive Special

Randy Brown 05/15/2013

This play can yield a lay up or post up by 3 or a three point shot by 4. Starts with a double flare for 1 who catches on the left wing. On the catch, 4 screens for 3 diving to the basket. If 4's defender helps a little on 3's cut, 4 steps out behind the line to shoot a three. False action between 2 and 5 on the right wing will occupy the weak side defenders. Give it a try! See More

Basketball Play - Shuffle Slip

Shuffle Slip

John Leonzo 05/14/2013

Here is a set that was run often by the Wichita State Shockers throughout the past season. This quick hitter gives you the option of 1 attacking off the ball screen, 4 cutting to the basket, 3 for a jumper, or 5 posting up on the block. This play is effective for getting a post up because of the misdirection that takes place off the ball screen. As 1 attacks off the ball screen and 4 cuts hard of the back screen from 5, the defense will anticipate the play coming to the strong side. As 3 pops and 5 slips to post up, the ball can be thrown back to 3 and 5 can effectively post up for a quality look at the basket. See More

Basketball Play - OKC DHO-Pin Down

OKC DHO-Pin Down

Daniel Murphy 05/14/2013

OKC ran this play to open the second half of their game 2 loss to the Grizzlies. It used a dribble hand off and pin down to get an open jump shot for their best player. This play shows that it's invaluable to have a great screen setter like Perkins to free up a great shooter like Durant. See More

Basketball Play - Kimberly

Kimberly

John Leonzo 05/14/2013

Here is a play that is a staple in Greg McDermott's offense at Creighton. This is a set that they go to when they are being pressured heavily by the defense. This set is effective because the ball is constantly changing sides of the floor, which in turn moves the defense into positions where they are vulnerable. This is a great set if you want to get the ball into the post and play inside out. See More

Basketball Play - Single/Double

Single/Double

Randy Brown 05/14/2013

This play is a good scoring option for your best scorer, 2. 1 dribbles out to the wing to push 2 to the middle of the lane. 3 fills and receives reversal pass from 1. 2 has a choice of cutting out the single or double side to catch and score. Post Option - if 2 comes out the single side, 5 posts on right side. 4 can cut to high post to eliminate weak side help. Give it a try! See More

NBA Play of the Day May 14: Oklahoma City Thunder Slide Punch

Kyle Gilreath 05/14/2013

Monday night in their Game 4 loss to the Memphis Grizzlies, the Oklahome City Thunder ran this action for a pick & roll. Throughout the game the Thunder continued to put Memphis into pick & roll situations with a shooter spaced away to force the defense to make a decision. This time, but moving Durant over top, X4 had to respect the cut for a moment which forced the defense to be a tad late on the pick & roll. Furthermore, the Memphis defense decided to stay home on 2 (Sefolosha) which allowed Ibaka to be open on the roll. See More

NBA Warmup

Here is a great drill that can be used to work on a players individual offensive skills. This drill can be done as part of an individual workout or can be done with an entire team. This drill gives you the opportunity to work on finishing around the basket, one on one moves, and jump shooting as well. This is a great drill to get lots of reps in a quick time! See More
