Basketball Play - Ballscreen Screenin

Ballscreen Screenin

Kyle Brown 03/12/2013

An action I saw this past weekend that would be great for a shooter. Most teams have an action where they screen big on big to get their 5 man sprinting into a ballscreen. This action counters that by screening in for the 4 man and trying to get him a shot. See More

Basketball Play - Double Screen

Double Screen

Basketball HQ 02/21/2013

For this play make sure your 2 man is your best shooter. He has to use a misdirection cutting to the ball side block when 1 passes to 3 to set his defender up for the double stagger. Your 3 and your 2 have to have the right timing of 3 not coming off of the screens early so 3 does not have to throw a cross court pass. This play is from the 2010-2011 Houston Rockets season. Simple but effective play out of the 1-4 high set. 1, 3, and 4 are decoys in this play to isolate 2 and 5. The objective is for 2 to use the on ball screen to drive deep in the paint to score or bounce to 5 rolling to the hoop. See More

Basketball Play - Wing Deny-Close Outs

Wing Deny-Close Outs

Randy Sherman 04/24/2015

Wing Deny/Close Out Drill Teaching Tips: When Coach has the ball at top of circle both defenders are denying v-cuts Goal #1: knock away deflection Goal #2: force offensive player to catch going away from the basket with his/her back to the rim Force offensive players to baseline checkpoint. DO NOT GET DRIVEN OVER THE TOP! Monitor close out technique If offensive player attempt to drive middle, reach step and force your man back up the rooftop As the player you're guarding moves closer to the rim on v-cut, close the space. As they move to perimeter, stay in deny stance but move closer to the ball. Drill Advancements: Coach attempts to penetrate. Wing defender DOES NOT open up to help seal drive. Instead he/she stays in deny stance and "plugs the drive with butt" Wing player attacks baseline. Help defender helps to seal drive outside the lane Allow wing players to cross screen for one another Instruct wing player to attempt an over-the-top drive every time they catch. Defeders should reach step and force ball-handler back up the rooftop. See More

Basketball Play - Rhody Up

Rhody Up

Kyle Gilreath 01/06/2014

This week I am going to share a series of plays that begin with rhody cuts. I term a rhody cut a cut from wing to wing above both elbows, usually off a screen or rub from one or both bigs. Some may refer to this action as an Iverson cut. This first action is a simple one without a lot of moment that gives your point guard a rim attack. If X4 of X2 sinks down to prevent the lay-up, look to skip to the opposite corner to 2. See More

Basketball Play - Kimberly

Kimberly

John Leonzo 05/14/2013

Here is a play that is a staple in Greg McDermott's offense at Creighton. This is a set that they go to when they are being pressured heavily by the defense. This set is effective because the ball is constantly changing sides of the floor, which in turn moves the defense into positions where they are vulnerable. This is a great set if you want to get the ball into the post and play inside out. See More

Basketball Play - Single/Double with Side Ball Screen

Single/Double with Side Ball Screen

Basketball HQ 09/18/2012

This action is meant to be quick and to get the defense out of position so that they cannot help as much on the side ball screen. If the big man is worried about the down screen and has to extend then he is going to be out of position to help on the ball screen. The man coming off the side ball screen needs to be aggressive and make a play for himself or a teammate. Set good screens on the baseline to get the opponents big man to have to help extend and then quickly sprint to the ball screen. Practice the right timing of this play. This play is from the 2007-2008 Chicago Bulls season. See More

Basketball Play - UNI Modified Flex

UNI Modified Flex

Andrew Greer 03/01/2015

Northern Iowa ran this set early in the game against Wichita State on 2/28/15. There are two ways to look at this play: 1. A quick hitter with 3 options. 2. A modified entry into the flex offense. *If all 3 options are covered you can see that if the 5 moves to the corner the set ends up in an easy transition to a continuous flex offense. See More

Basketball Play - Center Trip HO

Center Trip HO

Adam Spinella 08/03/2013

Center Trip DHO is a play used by Mike Woodson and the New York Knicks to get either Raymond Felton attacking the rim or Tyson Chandler open on a lob. The Knicks use the extra attention given by defenses to Carmelo Anthony as a decoy, and the valuable shooting skills of J.R. Smith and Steve Novak as an opportunity to space the floor on one side of the court. See More

Basketball Play - Trailer Flex

Trailer Flex

Adam Spinella 07/14/2013

This was a Secondary Offense set the Washington Wizards would run if they felt they had a mismatch in the post with Nene. John Wall would push Nene, the trailer, backdoor, which indicated to the rim runner that he should raise and set a ballscreen. See More

Basketball Play - SLOB - Ballscreen into Post Touch

SLOB - Ballscreen into Post Touch

Luke Riegel 09/20/2012

This sideline out of bounds set is something that we like to run because it provides an opporunity for our best penetrator and ball-handler to attack off the bounce to an open side. Having a 4 man that can shoot it from the perimeter helps stretch the defense and opens up the lane for 5 to duck-in at the rim. We've used the stagger screen as false-movement to occupy the defense, but it could also be a beneficial scoring option. See More

Basketball Play - 5 Loop

5 Loop

Kyle Gilreath 01/16/2014

Mark Gottfried frequented this half-court offense set while the head coach at the University of Alabama. The main reason this play was so successful was because Gottfried had a 5 man in 6'9" 255 lb Richard Hendrix. Hendrix was a force inside and almost impossible to move off the block. Once you got sealed, it was an automatic two points. If X3 tried chasing this screen, 3 occasionally would be open for a lay-up. See More
