Basketball Play - Open Flare

Open Flare

Adam Spinella 07/24/2013

This is a great end of game play for a team to use in a Secondary Break. With about 7 or 8 seconds left on the clock, there is enough time to dribble up in the full court and engage in this action. Likely it has to be a practiced and a default set; if it were to be drawn in a huddle for a late-game play it is likely the defense would apply some sort of full-court pressure, meaning more time would be needed to execute the set. Basketball Play - 3 Pop

3 Pop

Kyle Gilreath 07/22/2013

This is an excellent quick hitter the Sacramento Kings ran during the 2013 NBA Las Vegas Summer League. One of the options not drawn is for 4 to slip hard to the rim if X4 jumps out hard to help on the flare screen for 3. The shot for 2 is more likely in high school or college because X2 is allowed to sit in the lane and help, whereas in the NBA they can only sit there for 2.9 seconds. See More

Basketball Play - Pin Reverse Fade

Pin Reverse Fade

Adam Spinella 07/22/2013

Kevin Stallings and Vanderbilt have run this play for a few seasons, most notably with Festus Ezeli during the 2011-2012 season. As a four guard set it opens up the lane for a screening big man to slip to the rim and for guards to get many good shooting looks. See More

Basketball Play - Miami Sprint Screen Flare

Miami Sprint Screen Flare

Kevin Bruinsma 07/19/2013

Miami really utilized what I refer to as a sprint screen as somebody screens the screener before he sets a ball screen to eliminate the high hedge or trap. Here the 2 runs off a screen to go set a ball screen and then flares off 3. 3 dives right to the rim. The Spurs had to defend the attacking ball handler, a roll to the basket, and a flare. See More

Basketball Play - Flare Slip

Flare Slip

Adam Spinella 07/17/2013

The San Antonio Spurs ran this play against the Minnesota Timberwolves three years ago in an end game situation. It was a simple yet effective play to get a layup, which worked because the defense had to respect Manu Ginobili coming off a flare screen. See More

The Portland Trailblazers ran "3 Down" Tuesday night in their game versus the Chicago Bulls during the 2013 NBA Las Vegas Summer League. In this play it is 1's option to use the pick & roll or pass to 3 for a shot or pick & roll. See More

Basketball Play - Zipper Triple Flare

Zipper Triple Flare

Adam Spinella 07/16/2013

This year the Washington Wizards didn't have a successful win-loss percentage, but when their best lineup was in healthy, their offense was very potent. Coach Randy Wittman used the "Zipper Triple Flare" as an action to free up his shooters on the perimeter and give John Wall the ability to read the play both with and without the ball. See More

Basketball Play - Miami Iverson Curl & Pop

Miami Iverson Curl & Pop

Kevin Bruinsma 07/15/2013

A late game set ran by the Miami Heat in the NBA Finals to free up #34 Ray Allen. He gets a screen from the 4 man, and then runs off a flare from the 5 looking for his jumper. The Spurs took away the flare allowing the pass to go to #1 Chris Bosh. On his catch then #34 Ray Allen went back door for a lay-up. See More

Basketball Play - Spurs Zipper Triple Flare

Spurs Zipper Triple Flare

Kevin Bruinsma 07/09/2013

In the Western Conference Finals the San Antonio Spurs ran the corner flare action a few times against the Memphis Grizzlies. I didn't see it much against the Miami Heat in the NBA Finals. Here they utlized a zipper screen to get the 3 man the ball at the top of the key allowing #9 Tony Parker to run off 3 screens. After 2 set his screen he sprints to the wing that Parker started in. With all of the focus on Parker the ball goes back to the wing. The big comes to ball screen, which is rejected as #20 Manu Ginobili drives baseline. #9 Tony Parker drifts to the corner, and #21 Tim Duncan has two options based on his positioning and his defender, duck in and look for the drop down pass or set flare screen for Parker. Basketball Play - Spurs Flare, Shuffle, Ball Screen

Spurs Flare, Shuffle, Ball Screen

Kevin Bruinsma 07/02/2013

This set ran by the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA Finals is packed with action. Utilizing the trailing post is the reverse man to swing the ball around the perimeter, they then run the strech 4 man off a flare screen while the 3 gets a shuffle screen from 5. This forces the back side to focus on their own man, the 5 man to protect the hoop on 3's shuffle. 5 then comes and ball screens the 1 man with the defense engaged else where. See More
