Basketball Play - Princeton: DHO Back Flare

Princeton: DHO Back Flare

Matt Hackenberg 02/25/2022

In this diagram and embedded video we look at a set play for a flare screen. I like that this action clearly has an easy order of operations. After the hand off, read the back screen. If the back screen isn't there, check the flare screen. If the flare screen isn't there reverse the ball off the down screen. Basketball Play - Horns Push DHO Flare

Horns Push DHO Flare

Matt Hackenberg 02/25/2022

In this diagram and embedded video we look at a set play for a tight, big to big flare screen. This action is really clever in my opinion. It can be masked pretty well out of the horns alignment, gets the defense moving, and provides an easy clear out for a mobile big man. Basketball Play - DHO Misdirection Flare

DHO Misdirection Flare

Matt Hackenberg 02/14/2022

In this diagram and embedded video we look at a set play out of a 3-2 alignment for a flare screen three-pointer. I love how simple this action is, and I like how limited it is in the number of players touching the ball. I think sets like this are sure-fire good looks 2-3 times a game if spaced out properly. Basketball Play - 5 Out DHO Flare

5 Out DHO Flare

Matt Hackenberg 02/14/2022

In this diagram and embedded video we look at a set play out of a 5 Out alignment for a flare screen three. This becomes a pretty natural option in a secondary break setting. Simply initiating a DHO can be a trigger to execute the action without any play call. I like the action because it stretches the defense side to side. Basketball Play - Princeton: DHO Swing Flare

Princeton: DHO Swing Flare

Matt Hackenberg 02/14/2022

In today’s diagram and embedded video we look at a set play out of a Princeton alignment for a flare screen three. This set is interesting because it starts in a Princeton alignment, but flows into a Blocker-Mover pattern. It gets to the flare screen quickly but has enough movement before the flare to keep the defense occupied. Basketball Play - Misdirection DHO Gate

Misdirection DHO Gate

Matt Hackenberg 01/26/2022

In this diagram and embedded video we look at a set play for an elevater screen. The set starts in a 1-2-2 alignment and uses pin downs to get the wing entry, which is a DHO. The action starts flowing the other way while the gate screen is set up behind the play for the misdirection. Basketball Play - Flat Down DHO Back Lob BLOB

Flat Down DHO Back Lob BLOB

Matt Hackenberg 01/17/2022

In this diagram and embedded video we look at a BLOB play. I like this play as a way to create a lob for 5 or a driving gap for 1. The back screen happens quickly so the chances 5 comes clean off the screen is more likely. Basketball Play - 5 Out DHO Flare

5 Out DHO Flare

Matt Hackenberg 12/14/2021

This set uses some misdirections to set up a flare screen for our shooter. We want to get the defense watching the ball while we set up a dribble at flare. With the space created by the flare, we want to shoot or attack the close out. Video clip below.
