Basketball Play - Boston Celtics: 5 Out SAME Motion

Boston Celtics: 5 Out SAME Motion

David Taylor 11/03/2016

In the first few games of the NBA season, the Boston Celtics have played 5 Out Offense. I have attached a few diagrams of what it looks like. I call it 5 OUT SAME - because they initiate their offense with action on the first side of the floor. Essentially, the action consists of guard to guard screening action resulting in a side pick and roll (or DHO). See More

Basketball Play - Boston Celtics SLOB - Handoff Flare

Boston Celtics SLOB - Handoff Flare

Matt Wheeler 10/07/2016

The Boston Celtics summer league team used this play as their regular sideline out of bounds offense. Having the 5 pop up top to receive inbounds pass gives them a safe outlet since most 5's won't deny the ball that far up the floor. 1 comes off of multiple screens before looking for the inbounder (2) on the flare screen. If 2 isn't open. 1 uses the ball screen from 5 to create a scoring opportunity. See More

Boston Celtics - EOG "Need 3"

Ryan Nguyen 10/05/2016

With the Boston Celtics trailing by 3 points with 12.3 seconds remaining in the 4th quarter in their pre-season game versus the Philadelphia 76ers, Brad Stevens ran this set to create an open 3-point shot for James Young. However, Timothe Luwawu-Cabaroot does an excellent job of anticipating and getting over the flare screen to prevent the shot. Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot See More

Basketball Play - Celtics Pitch Flex Lob

Celtics Pitch Flex Lob

Adam Spinella 08/29/2016

Brad Stevens uses Isaiah Thomas as a screener frequently because of the extra attention the Celtics' top scorer receives. A common screen-the-screener action is the Flex set up, where Thomas would come off a down screen after setting the Flex. Instead, he sets a back screen here after the flex, with the rim unguarded on the flex overload for an easy alley oop opportunity. See More

Basketball Play - Boston Celtics Zip Wrap

Boston Celtics Zip Wrap

Adam Spinella 05/11/2016

Brad Stevens and the Celtics dealt with Isaiah Thomas being denied for much of their series against the Atlanta Hawks, and this was one counter that Stevens came up with to utilize Thomas. By having Thomas, who was denied, set a flare screen for Jae Crowder, there was no help defense as Crowder caught the ball uncontested on the wing. See More

Basketball Play - Boston Celtics "AI Attack"

Boston Celtics "AI Attack"

Gibson Pyper 02/26/2016

Designed to again get the player attacking to their strong hand, this set off the "AI-Iverson Cut" has options for players to attack off of. The first option is for the player to score and attack the rim, the second is if the defense collapses then look to kick to the big cutting off the hammer screen and finally a throwback set to get misdirection into a guard coming off a throwback screen. For the throwback screen it is important if the team "ICES" the ballscreen and you have already attacked the rim off the Iverson cut, then this will open up this counter even more, making it look like you are attacking and then throw it back for an open look. Basketball Play - Boston Celtics "Flips"

Boston Celtics "Flips"

Gibson Pyper 02/26/2016

This is a creative set and it is similar to weave action in which 3 players flip or pitch the ball as an interchange. On the final flip, a big steps up into a ballscreen. What I like about this set is it gets the players attacking to their strong hands off the final ballscreen: Avery Bradley to his right, and Isaiah Thomas to his left. See More

Basketball Play - Boston Celtics "Flip Flare"

Boston Celtics "Flip Flare"

Gibson Pyper 02/26/2016

Another set that uses Boston's versatility very well with their big men's shooting ability. When they need a 3 point shot they usually run this action in which a big receives a pass, flips it back to the guard right away and then receives a flare screen for a look from 3. I like the options this set offers in which the guard who receives the flip back can attack right away, this can draw the big man's defender in, and then look to hit the big off the flare for an open shot. Basketball Play - Boston Celtics "Punch Rip Turn"

Boston Celtics "Punch Rip Turn"

Gibson Pyper 02/26/2016

When the Celtics need a quick score for 2 they run backscreen out of a post up from a guard. Since the Celtics have versatility Stevens typically runs Evan Turner off a screen into the post, and the big then sets a backscreen for a guard at the top of the key. This option will not be there every time, so the big then continues and turns to set a pindown screen for the guard in the corner to look to get a jump shot off a curl cut. If all of these options are covered, he lets the player in the post go 1 on 1 and try to get a score. See More
