Basketball Play - Kill the Grass

Kill the Grass

Joel Hueser 08/08/2017

Kill the Grass has served us well over the years. We find this drill to be most beneficial when we are working with large numbers of campers and/or youth players. Players work with a partner or a group of three. Our older varsity players will also be spread throughout the gym and model the fundamental skills. They say, "It's not what you teach, but what you emphasize." KTG emphasizes the following fundamentals: passing, catching, triple threat, closing out, ball pressure, shot and foot fakes, blow-by and crossover live ball moves, dribbling, stops and pivots. Basketball Play - HoopGrind Basketball - "Elbow Chase"

HoopGrind Basketball - "Elbow Chase"

Doug Brotherton 04/07/2017

This box set incorporates our "ELBOW" action. The Elbow action starts in a box set, with guards splitting to the wings. Post lift up the lane line. What I like about this play is the versatility. It can be used to generate an open 3, a post iso, or a high/low look. It can also be used effectively against man-to-man or zone defense, by simply teaching 4 to set the cross screen on the middle of the zone. Basketball Play - Cleveland Cavs - Stagger Back

Cleveland Cavs - Stagger Back

Doug Brotherton 05/29/2017

This BLOB has resulted in multiple big shots for the Cleveland Cavs. They ran it for a Kyrie Irving three pointer, in the 2016 NBA Playoffs against Detroit. They also ran it, as an ATO, in the 2017 NBA Playoffs for a game clinching lay-up. The stack formation makes it especially difficult to guard, as the defense can not pre-switch any of the actions. Basketball Play - SLOB Plays: Shuffle Option

SLOB Plays: Shuffle Option

Doug Brotherton 06/11/2017

This set is an example of teaching multiple options, out of one SLOB set. The Houston Rockets do this better than any team in the NBA, and it allows them to adjust to whatever adjustments are made by the defense. I have designed the weak side action in this set to remain the same, regardless of the ball side action. This is to simplify the read for the player with the ball. After the shuffle cut, there are three options, which are triggered by the 4-man. The first option is to pass to the wing, and chase into a ballscreen. The second option is a dribble hand off with the wing. The final option is to pass to the wing, and cut to the block. See More

Basketball Play - Michigan Wolverines - Pop Slice Rip

Michigan Wolverines - Pop Slice Rip

Dave Nedbalek 03/27/2018

Don't be fooled but the lack of "success" of these set plays in the video clip below. The coaching staffs in post-season play are so well scouted and the teams are elite in preperation that oftentimes the desired shot is not available. Nonetheles, the analytics surrounding side changes and paint touches remains true, as they break the defense down with each action. This set presents several shot opportunities, and the spacing is so phenoenal that however the defense plays it, there will be scoring options with the advantage created. See More

Basketball Play - Marquette - Diamond Husky ISO SLOB

Marquette - Diamond Husky ISO SLOB

Dave Nedbalek 10/31/2018

This is a great set for multiple looks. Obviously it is defended well but you can see the scoring opportunities very easily. My critique of this video is the pace with which Marquette runs it. I'd love to see 2 already sprinting as 3 pops for the catch. I also would like 4 and 5 to shape up after the screen as the switching left a mismatch somewhere. You could even have 4 and 5 cross screen to enhance this set. More on the FMS blog: NCAA Preseason Top 25 XsOs Click to view all plays by Coach Dave Nedbalek! See More

Basketball Play - Gonzaga Bulldogs - Floppy Circle Hit

Gonzaga Bulldogs - Floppy Circle Hit

Dave Nedbalek 11/27/2018

This is an incredibly hard set to guard. Great action leading to an empty middle ball screen and if 1's defender is tagging the pick and roll like he should be, 1 will either be open on the throwback or 5 will be wide open at the rim. See the video below. Highly recommend watching Coach Few's teams play with scratch paper handy or FastDraw open! FMS Blog: Maui Invitational - Top 10 Plays See More

Basketball Play - Texas Tech Red Raiders - Hot Action

Texas Tech Red Raiders - Hot Action

Dave Nedbalek 04/08/2019

This is an extremely difficult action to make x5 guard but is incredibly simple to run. We call this "Hot Action" which is a back screen off-ball, followed immediately by an on-ball screen. If the big tags the cutter on the back-screen as he should, unless they are switching, this puts him late to his ball screen coverage. Simple, yet effective. Basketball Play - Texas Tech Red Raiders - Iverson Point Ricky

Texas Tech Red Raiders - Iverson Point Ricky

Dave Nedbalek 04/08/2019

This is another simple set that has high volume results. Depending on how the defense plays back-screens you can save this wrinkle for a key moment to get a great shooter a shot. If the defender is jumping to the ball and getting through the backscreen first the cutter can simply cut back out on the weak side for a wide open fade. The big can read the catch and go right into a step up screen if there is no advantage on the catch as well. A great wrinkle would be to slip your 5 man on the down-screen if there is switching or miscommunication. Blog Post: Texas Tech Defense Puts Opponents on Red Alert See More
