Basketball Play - San Diego State Aztecs - Over Curl Chase

San Diego State Aztecs - Over Curl Chase

Dave Nedbalek 11/27/2018

This is a great set utilizing components of Coach Beilein's two-guard offense. The down screen from 1 to 2 has multiple options: 2 could reject the screen, use and send 1 backdoor, or the way it's run here with 2 tight curling and 1 popping back out. Check out the video below. Side note: a great counter would be after 1 popping out, to then go hard backdoor on the heels of 2's cut. FMS Blog: Maui Invitational - Top 10 Plays See More

Basketball Play - Communication Drill: One More Drive & Kick Shooting

Communication Drill: One More Drive & Kick Shooting

Matt Wheeler 11/19/2018

This drill provides an opportunity to work on multiple skills in one setting: closeouts, footwork, attacking the paint, passing and communicaiton. 1 starts things off by passing to the 2 and finishes with a close out repetition. The three perimeter players (2,3 & 4) have their knees bent and hands up ready to step into the pass, working on their shot preparation footwork. 2 is focusing on getting two feet in the paint on the drive before passing to 3. As the ball is in the air to 3, 4 is saying "One More," which signals 3 to immediately swing the ball to 4 upon receiving it. The communication focus of this drill is in saying "One More" as the ball is in the air so the ball can be moved quickly for the open shot. Players should also communicate their teammates names as they are passing the ball to them. Basketball Play - Communication Drill: 50 Passes

Communication Drill: 50 Passes

Matt Wheeler 11/19/2018

50 passes is a competitive team drill that focuses on ball toughness, passing, screening and communication. The goal of 50 passes is to be the first team to successfully complete 50 passes without getting the ball deflected and having the passer say the name of the person they are passing to. Eliminating dribbles after the first pass increases the pressure that the defense can put on the offense, making it more difficult to complete the passes. Requiring the passer to say the name of the receiver helps to build good communication habits while under duress. Basketball Play - Memphis Grizzlies - Shuffle Flare Rip DHO

Memphis Grizzlies - Shuffle Flare Rip DHO

Ryan Nguyen 11/13/2018

This is one of the options that the Memphis Grizzlies run out of their "Shuffle" series. The play starts with the PG making the hit-ahead pass then cuts through to the opposite side of the floor. 5 then flashes to the strong side elbow to set a shuffle screen after the pass to the corner. If the initial cut off the shuffle screen isn't available for a score, 4 sets a flare for 2 on the weak side then 3 sets a rip screen for 4 (STS action). Immediately after the rip screen, 3 sprints into a DHO with 5 and stops behind for a shot if defense goes under. On the FMS Blog: Gap Creating Cuts to Enhance Your Offense See More

Basketball Play - Indiana Hoosiers - Zone Attack (2 plays)

Indiana Hoosiers - Zone Attack (2 plays)

Dustin Cooper 11/11/2018

Overloading against a zone can be overwhelming for the defense. Indiana coach Archie Miller uses these two overload actions to create a 1 on 1 matchup with his bigs vs the middle of the zone. 1: In the first video clip, the wing defender is confused on who to cover and leaves the corner wide open. 2: In the last clip, the wing tries to split the wing and corner offensive player, leaving a 1 on 1 in the post, which is exactly what the Hoosiers are looking for. Basketball Play - Gonzaga Bulldogs - Mix Pitch Dive Keep

Gonzaga Bulldogs - Mix Pitch Dive Keep

Dave Nedbalek 11/09/2018

This is a great set from Gonzaga Coach Mark Few. It appears that 5 is sprinting into a ball screen, but actualy will recieve the pass and look to hit the guard cutting backdoor. If 5 is overplayed, this is a great backdoor opportunity for him as well. If the backdoor cut is not there, then everyone holds and 5 has a double gap to drive his man from the top of the key. Basketball Play - Kansas Jayhawks - Horns 54

Kansas Jayhawks - Horns 54

Dave Nedbalek 11/09/2018

This is a great set that we have seen many NBA teams run, namely the Cleveland Cavaliers utilizing LeBron James as the screner. T he proximity to the rim and the pace with which Kansas runs it makes it even tougher for the defenders to talk their way through defending this action. I love that the Jayhawk bigs casually jog down before popping back up the lane lines quickly to start the defense out of step. On the FMS Blog: NCAA Preseason Top 25 XsOs - Teams 1-5 See More

Basketball Play - Duke Blue Devils - Flash Hold

Duke Blue Devils - Flash Hold

Dave Nedbalek 11/09/2018

This may not be the most innovative set, but it is the essence of good offense: get your best player the ball in spots where he/she can be effective. Duke will flash Reddish or Williamson to the elbow extended area and space off of him. They are trusting in their decision making, but also trusting that regardless of the defense knowing exactly what is coming they will find a way. The worst thing you can do to elite players is neutralize their skill by running them through aimless sets. As quickly as possible, get your best player the ball in their spot. For those of us that don't have 5 lottery picks on our roster, I added a wrinkle to the last frame that might serve you well with some split action around the catch.
