Basketball Play - Depaul Horns Action

Depaul Horns Action

Kevin Bruinsma 01/22/2015

Trailing by 2 with 20 seconds left and facing a UIC 2-3 zone defense Depaul went to a horns action against the zone. They made it difficult for UIC’s zone to determine when to bump and when to stay defending the ball and it ultimately led to an open game winning 3. Keep in mind Depaul didn't hit the shot off the initial action, but the action broke UIC down and led to the wide open 3 pointer. See More

Basketball Play - Green Bay Horns Big

Green Bay Horns Big

Kevin Bruinsma 01/24/2015

Green Bay needed a score in a huge Horizon League contest down 1 against Valpo. They used pre-season POY #24 Keifer Sykes as a decoy to free up their second best player in Greg Mays. Ball was entered to Mays who received a 5 man ball screen so he could drive it hard to his right hand. With him putting so much pressure on the defense with the drive, it allowed the 5 man great rebounding position if he would have missed the shot. See More

Basketball Play - Detroit's Wing Iso

Detroit's Wing Iso

Kevin Bruinsma 01/28/2015

A play 100% designed to isolate your more athletic or stronger 4 man on the side of the floor. Detroit utilizes #2 Juwan Howard Jr. in multiple ways but he's at his best when he can play 1 on 1 basketball. Detroit isn't a team that runs a ton of offense but they push it hard in transition and attempt to create mis-matches thru blowing the ball up the floor. After transition their best offense is finding different ways to isolate players on the floor, in this case #2 Howard. He gets the switch in the ball screen and then all of the help on the back side is guards. With his strength & quickness he can power it up over smaller defenders. See More

Basketball Play - Green Bay Roll & Replace Backdoor

Green Bay Roll & Replace Backdoor

Kevin Bruinsma 01/29/2015

Before you break down this play's design you need to understand the motive and validity of the action. Green Bay's best player is #24 Keifer Sykes. Most likely #24 Sykes will be playing in the pros next year after he wins Horizon League Player of the Year. Because of his abilities he is always over played in attempt to deny him the ball, especially a team like Detroit that thrives on pressure and getting into passing lanes. Because of that this play was so effective. By placing the 5 man on the perimeter they removed Detroit's big from the back side help, and by rolling and replacing they delayed the help side. I also like how they used their three man #4 Fouse as the passer knowing he needed to dribble and make a good pass to #24 Sykes. See More

Basketball Play - Valpo Pick & Roll

Valpo Pick & Roll

Kevin Bruinsma 01/31/2015

In a marquee Horizon League match-up earlier in the year Valparaiso made the trip to face Oakland. Trailing with under two minutes left in the game Valpo turned to a pick & roll action with movement out of both corners to occupy the low man away who traditionally covers the rim. By rolling up #25 Peters on the ball side it forced the Oakland defender to follow up, making the back side defenders sink in the middle. The pin down screen and space kept those defenders in defending action as opposed to getting into gaps. All of the movement out of both corners confused Oakland and led to a huge basket for Valpo. Basketball Play - YSU Horns Options

YSU Horns Options

Kevin Bruinsma 02/03/2015

When playing Cleveland State you have to find ways to counter their pressue and make it as difficult as possible for them to successfully trap you. They trap all ball screens so running a horns set is one of the most difficult ways for them to do that successfully. Trailing at the half at our place we started the second half running three different variations of horns on our first three possessions. We scored on all 3. With them trapping the ball screen it makes it crucial the opposite post defender sinks in the hole or there is a strong blitz from the corner/wing defender. You can see in the first clip how even though our PG #11 DJ Cole got trapped as soon as he got the ball to our 4 man #4 Shawn Amiker he had a clear driving lane to the basket. The second clip shows us going off the 4 man, their 5 didn't sink far enough and we got an And 1. The third & final clip shows a pass entry that brought us to a back screen and down screen action on the side of the floor. With them pressuring the ball our 5 man #20 Bobby Hain created space off the bounce and hit the slipping 4 man for a lay-up. See More

Basketball Play - YSU vs UWGB 3-2 Zone D

YSU vs UWGB 3-2 Zone D

Kevin Bruinsma 02/14/2015

The turning point of our game on Wednesday Vs. Green Bay was when Green Bay went to their 3-2 zone defense. This is their defense they go to when they need to change momentum or they are on the ropes. Unfortunately for us down the stretch it did just that and they were able to come back and win the game. They attempted to go to it earlier in the second half and we had a set play ready for it. We executed it really well and got an open 3-pointer for our best shooter. Because of our preparation and execution we were able to pull them out of the 3-2 early in the second half. The play design gave our PG a screen forcing the corner guy of the zone to rotate up and play the ball. That then forced Green Bay's center to sprint out to the corner to guard our best shooter. We created a mis-match. See More

Basketball Play - RMU 2-3 Split Set

RMU 2-3 Split Set

Kevin Bruinsma 03/11/2015

Robert Morris just won the NEC Championship and a spot in the NCAA Tournament. Back on December 2, 2014 we made the short 50 minute drive to RMU to play at the Sewell Center. We ended up winning the game by a score of 89-81 after one of the most offensive efficient first halves of basketball i’ve ever seen as both teams shot over 62% from the field. The second half we went to more zone in attempt to slow them down, and it worked. One of their counters to our 2-3 zone defense was to screen in the top defenders of the zone allowing their guard to split the defense and get in the middle of the lane. See More

Basketball Play - Duke On-Ball Back Screen

Duke On-Ball Back Screen

Kevin Bruinsma 04/24/2015

Duke ran this play to free up Winslow going to the rim and once the ball is reversed it turns into a post iso for him. Okafor screws the play up by not moving to the weak side block, but Duke ends up getting a basket on a post move from Winslow. If Okafor would have slid over to the opposite block and ducked his man in, Winslow would have had a lob dunk after the back screen from the point guard. See More

Basketball Play - Kentucky Side On-Ball Sets

Kentucky Side On-Ball Sets

Kevin Bruinsma 05/02/2015

The first video clip is a simple side ball screen with a double screen on the weak side of the floor. The interesting thing about this action is the spacing UK uses on the weak side of the floor. The double screen is set just inside of the three-point line which is more commonly seen in NBA sets where defenses have to play tighter to their man due to everyone on the floor being able to make shots. Kentucky ends up getting a lay-up in the post out of this action as Wisconsin can’t over help with the double screen being right below the 3-point line. The second video clip is a ball screen set at the top of the key to an open side of the floor. If the guard can’t attack the open space he throws back to the popping 4 man who looks for his own shot. On his catch the 3 man that’s stacked up with the 5 man slams 5’s defender so 4 has a straight line pass to 5 sealing in the lane. The deep post catch forced Wisconsin to double down and left UK’s guard wide open for a 3-point shot. See More

Basketball Play - Wisco On-Ball Flare

Wisco On-Ball Flare

Kevin Bruinsma 05/11/2015

In this specific play Wisconsin made a modification to the common roll & replace ball screen set in which the 4/5 set a ball screen then roll to the rim while the other big lifts to the top of the key replacing him. This makes it tough for the defense to keep somebody in the hole to defend the roll guy. In this Wisconsin ball screen set after Frank Kaminsky sets the ball screen and begins to roll, the 4 man Nigel Hayes screens in for Kaminsky who flares to the wing. With Kaminsky’s man defending the ball screen and retreating quickly to get back to him, Hayes’ defender is in help side to pick up the rolling Kaminsky. Hayes is able to create a deep screening angle to pin Kaminsky’s defender in freeing him up for a wide open jump shot. This small variation was very effective as Kentucky’s bigs were more used to covering the traditional roll and replace action with Kaminsky rolling to the rim, and Hayes replacing him. See More

Basketball Play - Syracuse Flare On-Ball

Syracuse Flare On-Ball

Kevin Bruinsma 05/04/2016

This action is how Syracuse scored their first basket against North Carolina in the Final Four. It is a great play with Syracuse’s personnel utilizing #10 Cooney and his shooting ability. The action begins with the high ball screen while Cooney flares off a screen looking for his shot. When he doesn’t have a shot the other post sets a side ball screen for him to attack the basket. Basketball Play - UMBC - Middle STS

UMBC - Middle STS

Kevin Bruinsma 03/28/2018

This is a set UMBC ran against Virginia in their upset victory in the NCAA Tournament. I love the action because the guard that screens for the big to set a ball screen then comes off a 5 man screen to the corner. His man should be in the hole to defend the pick and roll, and when he recovers he has to ellude a screen. NCAA Tournament: XsOs Behind the Upsets See More
