Favorite Send to FastDrawTeam USA used multiple strategies to try to combat the zone defense that Turkey played throughout most of their World Cup game. In this play the two ball screens resulted in Kemba Walker (1) being matched up against a post player in the middle of Turkey's zone. On the first ball screen from 4, x1 fought through the screen to get back matched up with 1. 4 cut to the wing to occupy x2 and keep him from providing help on the second screen. When 1 dribbled off the screen from 5 to the middle of the floor, he was able to attack x5 one on one fand use his quickness advantage to get a basket. Favorite Send to FastDrawAustralia opened their World Cup match against France with this play to get Patti Mills a shot. 2 starts the play by setting the back screen for 4. While this is happening, 3 cuts to the wing so his defender can't provide help on the possible lob pass to 4. 2 then cuts off the screen from 5 to get the ball on the wing. If 2 can't turn the corner right away for the shot, 5 follows to set a ball screen as the other players spread out along the perimeter for spacing. See More
Favorite Send to FastDrawArgentina ran this quick action to get the ball into the post early in their World Cup quarterfinal game against Serbia. 3 started the play by cutting to the opposite corner to create some movement. As 1 turned the corner on the ball screen, 5 was cutting to the basket off the cross screen from 2. Argentina's point guard, Facundo Campazzo put some pizzazz on the behind the back pass to get Marcos Delia the dunk. See video clip below. See More
Favorite Send to FastDrawThe Turkish National team ran this play late in the 4th quarter to get an open look at a three-point shot for their point guard. 1 dribbles to the right off the initial ball screen from 4. As 4 pops to the opposite wing, 5 follows for a second ball screen to get 1 open for the shot. See video clip below. Alternate Ending Option: PNR Twist Floppy See More
Favorite Send to FastDrawThe Turkish National Team ran this play early in their overtime game againt Team USA to set up Cedi Osman for three-point shot to give them the lead. Turkey had previously run the PNR twist action with two ball screens for their point guard. This time they went into a floppy action after the ball screens, with 2 screening for 3 under the rim and 4 and 5 setting down screens for both wing players for a shot. See video clip below. Favorite Send to FastDrawTeam USA basketball faced a zone defense for much of their game against Turkey in the FIBA World Cup. They were down 1 late in overtime and ran this play to get a shot for Joe Harris (3) off of some movement. This is a common play that Gregg Popovich uses with the Spurs against man defense. They made some adjustments to run this as an effective play against Turkey's 2-3 zone defense. 1 reversed the ball to 5. Then 5 went into a dribble handoff with 2. but didn't need to set a good screen on x2. This allowed x2 to get through the screen and shift out of the wing area to matchup with 2 up top. 5 then screened x4 on the outside of the zone to get 3 open. This essentially forced Turkey to matchup man to man with x4 having to guard 3. x4 trailed on the screen and 3 was able to turn the corner on the catch and drive to the basket. See More

Favorite Send to FastDrawWing ball screens can be difficult to guard especially verse teams that run them frequently in their sets or run pick & roll motion. We went to icing wing ball screens to limit their effectiveness. Benefits of this defensive strategy: 1) You keep the ball on the wing, shrink the court and make the ball handler play in a crowd. 2) There are not many guards that excel at the off the dribble mid-range pull up. 3) With the rise in analytics more and more coaches discourage the mid range pull up. 4) The forward/center is limited to mid-range jumpers and threes. 5) Although the three-ball is shot at an increasing clip, there are not many centers that we face that will shoot a high percentage from three. We are ok with the other team's center taking contested threes and mid-range jumpers. In fact most of the centers we face don't shoot them at all or are reluctant. 6) Limiting the shot options to contested threes and mid-range jumpers by the ball handler and forward, the other players that are accustomed to getting kick out threes aren't in rhythm when they finally get touches. 7) Not many teams know how to counter icing wing ball screens. So some coaches will just stop running plays that have wing on ball screens because you can blow up an entire play and stagnate their offense by not letting the wing ball screen happen.
