In this diagram and embedded video, we look at the spread offense used in high school basketball. This offense uses the high post and a series of cutters to attack the defense in a variety of ways. This offensive concept has always been a unique and interesting play style to me, ever since I first saw it when Stephen F. Austin was running it under Brad Underwood in the early 2010's. In today’s diagram and embedded video we look at a zone offense scheme we called “Gaps.” We simply aligned in a 1-3-1 and used concepts to attack zone defense. We used this as our base zone offense, meaning when we saw zone, we automatically went to this concept unless I overrode it with another call. The concpet is very simple, and the details of execution are what's going to make or break the success of this concept. I liked to use this, and pair it with a set package of 4-5 plays as our zone offense playbook. It's baffling to me how often we would score on this simple play. We used it more as a BLOB special, about once every game or so. The less often you run it, the more effective it will be. The counter action, as seen in the diagram and in the embedded video, can also create some decent looks for your team, but that action requires more work once the ball is entered than the initial action. This diagram/video looks at a continuity action to run against zone defense. Every season we had a "base zone offense," meaning when we saw zone, we were automatically in that zone concept unless the play call was overridden by myself. This is a great option for a base zone offense. It has some movement, and is simple and effective. We cut a player from the back side into the middle of the zone looking for a penetrating pass into the zone. The player exiting from the middle to top tends to suck the guards out, leaving the middle more open. The embedded video shows the concept in more depth. This "Sideline Delay" diagram and video is designed to control the clock and dictate the pace of the game through your offense. This particular strategy used a spread alignment with an empty sideline for a little twist on the typical 4 corners strategy. Our "Stacks" delay game strategy is designed to dictate the tempo of the game through offensive possessions. This strategy uses stacks at the elbows to balance the court. I like it becuase it can be used as a pure delay game, but also has enough attacking options, espeically if the defense falls asleep, to mix in throughout a game without the desire to stall. This diagram looks at a delay game tactic. This strategy and spacing are hard to disrupt. The concept is very simple - use a down screen out of a 2-1-2 alignment to milk the clock, looking for opportunities to attack if the defense extends too far. In this set we go back to the interior for a set play designed to get a scoring post a touch on the block. The set uses a little misdirection by dribble pushing the entry away from where the post up will materialize. The dribble push triggers a zipper cut, and the ball is swung to a player receiving a pin down screen to be open. The post who pins down, then seals up for the post entry. In this diagram we look at a continuity offense to get the ball inside. The set features multiple options to feed a single post player. The action can be ran to feature two bigs at the same time if you have the luxury of multiple interior threats.
