About This Play/Drill

This is the last counter in a series that the Dallas Mavericks used against the Miami Heat in their title run in 2011. Rick Carlisle does an excellent job of recognizing the strengths of the players that he has on the floor and taking advantage of those strengths. In this play sequence Jason Kidd is the (1), JET Jason Terry is the (2), Shawn Marion is the (3), Dirk is the (4), and Tyson Chandler is the (5). This set is a great example of getting your best scorers. Dirk (4) and Jason Terry (2) in position to do some damage.

  • As 1 starts to come off 5's ballscreen, 3 replaces to the three point line. As this is happening, 2 sets a flex for 4.

  • 5 continues the downscreen flex continuity. The first looks is the 4 man for the iso or 2 coming off the screen-the-screener action for the 3. If 2 is open, he bombs. 5 is in perfect position for offensive glass. **If the 4 man catches, the 3 sprints to the corner and the 2 spaces to the wing.

  • The second counter is a Dirk specific option, made for a shooting or Euro style 4. 1 and 2 set a stagger for 4. After his downscreen, 1 gets a flex screen from 5 and cuts corner. 2 spaces corner, and 5 posts momentarily, before spacing. **The Mavericks had Terry set pin-downs for Dirk regularly that isolated those two. This is an example of an action within an action

  • The first look is for 4 on the 3, but 1 can be open on the baseline flex. 1 has to make a quick read, if he isn't open he sprints corner for the 3. On the catch 4 looks to bomb, but he has a quick look to 5 on the post.

  • If none of these options are open, 4 can dribble in, or set pick and roll with 2.
