Coach Beilein is a master of details and teaching fundamentals. He believes shooting percentage goes up when players have their fingers on the seams of the basketball. He uses these drills to teach players to get their fingers on the seams of the ball.
Players pass ball back and forth. Players start in a staggered stance. Right handed shooters start with their right foot back. Left handed shooters start with their left foot back. As the player catches the ball and pivots into their imagainary shot, the player must rotate the ball in their hands so that their fingers rest on the seams when their "hot foot" (non pivot foot) moves forward. Now the player is in position to take a shot, with the ball in their shot pocket and the fingers are resting on a seam of the ball
Players spin the ball on the ground in front of their bodies. As the players pick the spinning ball up they must rotate the ball in their hands so that when they reach their front shooting position their fingers are resting on a seam of the ball
