These movement sequences combine an emphasis on lateral defensive quickness and wing curl shooting options with precise footwork. Each sequence results in a different movement pattern and shot, but builds on an attack counter strategy. This is certainly a technique development drill, but can be modified to add an antagonist to provide initial cue for defensive acceleration direction, and then rotational closeout context on the curl.
Dr. Dish can be set with a tempo long enough for the option which requires the most time and shooter can machine gun feet until Dr. Dish passes the ball to start each option sequence. Or, if coach is passer then the Dr. Dish remote can be used.
If used for technique development, the sequences should be performed on both sides of the basket, either alternately or repeating the 6 sequences on the opposite side.
SETUP: Dr. Dish set to pass to top of key with tempo set to allow remote control pass triggering (assuming coach/trainer is passer (P))
Sequence 1 (Downhill Rip & Pull-up J):
- Shooter (S) begins in defensive stance at the elbow and facing half court.
- Upon Dr. Dish pass to top of the key, shooter executes 2 explosive lateral push-steps (aka 'big steps') across the lane, then accelerates with a cross-step into a sprint to the wing.
- At the wing, shooter curls toward the baseline looking for the pass from the top of the key.
- Shooter receives the pass on top foot and rips the ball into a downhill (towards baseline) 'boom-1-2' jump shot while maximizing separation from point of catch. (note: In this rip-step maneuver, it is important that the ball hits the floor on the dribble WITH the step to avoid a travel violation.)
- In the frame 1 diagram, this maneuver is performed on the left side, and the footwork is: catch on right foot, rip & pound dribble on the left foot step, followed by the right-left (1-2 step) into the pull up jump shot.
Sequence 2 (Rip Counter & Uphill Pull-up J):
- Upon Dr. Dish pass to top of the key, shooter executes 2 explosive lateral push-steps (aka 'big steps') across the lane, then accelerates with a cross-step into a sprint to the wing.
- At the wing, shooter curls toward the baseline looking for the pass from the top of the key.
- Shooter receives the pass on top foot, but this time rips the ball into a downhill jab, then quickly rips it back into an uphill 'boom-1-2' jump shot. (note: In this double-rip maneuver, the key is to get a quick-release shot off a quick change of direction/momentum, but still get some separation from the hopefully leaning defender with the 1-2 step. Of course, if the defender falls down and separation is not necessary, a pound-hop shot would be equally effective.)
- In the frame 2 diagram, this maneuver is performed on the left side, and the footwork is: catch on right foot, rip & jab with the left foot letting the ball extend past the left knee; rip the ball back past the right knee into a pound-dribble; then, as the ball rise off the floor from the pound-dribble take the left & right step into the shot.
Sequence 3 (Double Rip Counter & Downhill Pull-up J):
- Upon Dr. Dish pass to top of the key, shooter executes 2 explosive lateral push-steps (aka 'big steps') across the lane, then accelerates with a cross-step into a sprint to the wing.
- At the wing, shooter curls toward the baseline looking for the pass from the top of the key.
- Shooter receives the pass on top foot, but this time rips the ball into a downhill jab, then quickly rips it back into an uphill 'lean', and back again into a downhill 'boom-1-2' jump shot. (note: In this triple-rip maneuver, it is important to radically change directional body momentum twice with a quick rhythm.)
- In the frame 3 diagram, this maneuver is performed on the left side, and the footwork is: catch on right foot, rip & jab with the left foot letting the ball extend past the left knee; rip the ball back past the right knee, and then back past the left knee into a pound-dribble; then, as the ball rise off the floor from the pound-dribble take the right & left step into the shot.
Sequence 4 (Middle Go-Dribble Pull-up J):
- Upon Dr. Dish pass to top of the key, shooter executes 2 explosive lateral push-steps (aka 'big steps') across the lane, then accelerates with a cross-step into a sprint to the wing.
- At the wing, shooter now curls back toward the top of the key looking for the pass out of the curl.
- Shooter receives pass on the inside foot, and quickly pushes the ball out into a go-dribble toward the elbow for the pull up jump shot. (note: In this quick, separational, 'boom-1-2' attack it is again important that the ball hits the floor WITH the first attacking step to avoid the travel violation..if playing by the rules.)
- In the frame 4 diagram, this maneuver is performed on the left side, and the footwork is: catch on left foot, go-dribble on the right foot, then take the left & right step into the shot.
Sequence 5 (Middle 2-Dribble Pull-up J):
- Upon Dr. Dish pass to top of the key, shooter executes 2 explosive lateral push-steps (aka 'big steps') across the lane, then accelerates with a cross-step into a sprint to the wing.
- At the wing, shooter now curls back toward the top of the key looking for the pass out of the curl.
- Shooter receives pass on the inside foot, and quickly pushes the ball out for 2 sprint dribbles toward the centerline of the key and the pull up jump shot. (note: In this 2-dribble sprint maneuver, it is still important that the ball hits the floor WITH the first attacking step to avoid the travel violation. Another key concept is to cover as much distance on the 2 dribbles as possible..as quickly as possible..to generate momentum and keep the defender on the run.)
- In the frame 5 diagram, this maneuver is performed on the left side, and the footwork is: catch on left foot, go-dribble on the right step (ball returns to the hand on the next left step), then pound the ball on the subsequent right step, and take the left & right step into the shot.
Sequence 6 (Middle 2-Dribble Spin-counter Step-back J):
- Upon Dr. Dish pass to top of the key, shooter executes 2 explosive lateral push-steps (aka 'big steps') across the lane, then accelerates with a cross-step into a sprint to the wing.
- At the wing, shooter now curls back toward the top of the key looking for the pass out of the curl.
- Shooter receives pass on the inside foot, and quickly pushes the ball out for 2 sprint dribbles toward the centerline of the key, but instead of pounding the ball on the 2nd dribble into a 'boom-1-2' pull-up..the pound sets up the spin move to quickly change directions and momentum for the step-back jump shot. (note: In this 2-dribble spin-counter maneuver, it is still important that the ball hits the floor WITH the first attacking step to avoid the travel violation. Another key concept is to cover as much distance on the 2 dribbles as possible..as quickly as possible..to generate momentum and keep the defender on the run. An additional key concept is to let the 2nd attacking step become an anchor for the spin-pivot to set up either of 2 step-back options: the reverse jump stop step-back or, the penetration dribble step-back.)
- In the frame 6 diagram, this maneuver is performed on the left side, and the footwork is: catch on left foot, go-dribble on the right step (ball returns to the hand on the next left step which becomes the anchor for the spin-pivot), then pound the ball on the subsequent right step (still in the direction of the centerline) before pulling the ball with the same hand into the reverse pivot off the left foot to change direction and momentum. Next, the swing foot (right foot) from the pivot lands and the shooter can either gather the ball and reverse jump stop off the right foot into the step-back J..or, pull and drop the ball as the swing foot lands, switch hands and quickly take a left/right step into a penetration dribble with the left hand and then execute a step-back J.
